Rights Respecting School 

There’s been a lot of development in our rights education here at Maddiston Primary in recent months with lots in the pipeline. We have had rights sessions during In-service days, staff seeking rights based professional development, staff participating in a children and young people’s rights cluster working group, children and staff planning to campaign and advocate for the rights of children locally and globally, a whole school rights mascot competition and relaunch of our lunch and playground charters. We have been working on a new relationships policy as well as an inclusive rights and SHANARRI planner that can be delivered across the whole school. Like we said, busy!

However, here at Maddiston, our children are learning about, through and for rights everyday. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) is at the heart of our ethos and go hand in hand with our school values. We are proud that our pupils are aware of their own rights and are always learning new ways to respect the rights of others.

Ask your child about their favourite right, what the UNCRC stands for and if they can explain the ABCDE of rights. We are so proud of our extremely knowledgeable and respectful young people and are confident you will be too.

Sustaining Gold Rights Respecting Schools Status

As you all know, we are a UNICEF Rights Respecting Gold school. This is an achievement that we, as a school community, are very proud of. Therefore, we are continuously striving to rise to this standard. Here are some things that have happened, are happening and will be happening in Maddiston Primary that promote children’s rights.

 

Teaching and learning about rights:

  • Right of the fortnight
  • Education for Sustainability is embedded in planning for teaching and learning
  • Rights are identified and highlighted by pupils/staff during appropriate lessons/assemblies

 

Teaching and Learning through rights:

  • Classroom and playground charters
  • Rights Knights steering group
  • Inclusion opportunities are prioritised where possible
  • Sun station and Sun Stops to help meet the needs of individuals
  • Children involved in planning their own learning and next steps
  • Keeping parents and the wider school community informed through newsletters, Parent Council meetings and events

 

Teaching and learning for rights:

  • Project Sunshine
  • Participation in OutRight Campaign
  • Surfers against Sewage campaign (P7/6)
