Maths at Maddiston
Every day in P1 - P7, we practise our times tables and/or our number bonds. This is crucial to developing rapid recall and retention of these number facts which are key within problem solving. We do this in different ways as it is important that we say, make and do with these number facts to help us remember them.
- P1 work on number bonds to 10 and introduce doubles to 5
- P2 work on number bonds to 20 and introduce the 2 times table
- P3 extend numbers to 100, consolidate the 2 times table and introduce the 4, 5 and 10 times tables
- P4 consoldiate the 2, 4, 5 and 10 times tables and introduce the 3 times tables
- P5 work on consolidating the 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 times tables and introduce the 8, 6, 9 and 7 times tables
- P6 and P7 consolidate all tables
We also do a daily fraction/decimals question as nationally this is an area where Scottish pupils struggle in maths. This was part of our improvement plan in 2021 and it has been very effective in raising attainment and confidence within this area.
We are using the Number Talks approach to develop our number sense and we do this two/three times per week. A Number Talk is a five to fifteen minute classroom conversation around purposefully crafted computation problems that are solved mentally. The teacher facilitates the learning rather than teaching and the children share how they solved the problem. The class then agree on which method was the most efficient. This method has been shown to deepen their understanding of number.
Bar Modelling was introduced to our school in 2022-23 to help visualise worded problems which we do daily. Please click below to get more information around the bar modelling approach.
The children all have access to Sumdog which is a maths website and app where they are motivated to practise their maths skills in a fun way both at home and at school. As they play, they answer questions which are personalised and their progress through the maths curriculum is tracked. Their teachers can set them challenges and monitor their achievements. We take part in Sumdog competitions regularly and we have had great success with many of our pupils regularly finishing in the top ten and some achieving prefect scores of 1000 questions answered correctly. Thanks to Mr Aitken, four of our pupils had great fun visiting the Sumdog headquarters in Edinburgh with Miss Inch and Mrs Rodgers where they were able to trial some new games.

Learning Cafe March 2024
At the Curriculm Learning Cafe, we shared our maths priority with parents. We demonstrated fun ways to learn number bonds and times tables. They were able to take part in a times table challenge but they weren't able to beat us! We showed them how to solve worded maths problems using the Bar Modelling approach.
Maths Priority 2022-23
Our maths priority this year has been to develop a whole school methodology to problem solving by supporting learner understanding using the Bar Modelling approach to visualise the problem. All stages from P2-7 have trialled this approach which has been very successful. The pupils shared their learning with the wider school community at the learning cafes in May.

Maths Priority 2021-22
Our maths priority this year has been around fractions, decimals and percentages. We have had a number of interventions running from P2-7 and they have been very successful. Click on the leaflets below to see what your child has been learning in this subject area.
